FLAWED POLICE ROAD CRASH INVESTIGATIONS

The RAC fairly recently obtained considerable media coverage for their claim that the Police only investigated who was to blame for road traffic accidents, but gave virtually no time to investigating the fundamental causes of accidents.

This means that drivers are nearly always blamed and punished, but manufacturers, the road surface and particularly the wind strength ( for example) hardly ever enter into accident reports.

Starting with the West Midlands I hope that we can now have a response to the RAC claims. The RAC wish to have a national body set up for investigating road traffic accidents, but I feel that unless Police Road Traffic Accident Investigators can make a contribution little progress will be made as these are the people who should be looking for the evidence. Councillors and other members of the Police Authority need to explain how this matter will be taken forward. Great progress has been made in reducing road accidents, but HGV’s in particular are failing to make as much improvement as most other categories.
